KOOKABURRAS

Dacelo Novaeguineae

The laughing kookaburra gets its name from the loud territorial sounds it makes.

They call loudly at dawn and dusk. These calls are known as the ‘Bushman’s Clock’.

They are the largest members of the Tree Kingfisher family.

Kookaburras are carnivores meaning they eat mainly meat including small reptiles, insects, chicks and ducklings.

They have large bills with a black upper mandible (top beak) and tan lower mandible.

In Australia kookaburras in the wild are very cheeky and often steal food from the barbie.

A kookaburras beak gets longer if it tells lies.

The name kookaburra is an onomataopoeic loan word from Wiradjuri Guuguubarra. Try saying it.
